About Pilates

Joseph Pilates teaching at his studio in New York City.

Pilates is a system of exercises developed by Joseph Hubertus Pilates (1883-1967) who believed the stresses of modern day living upset the balance of body and mind, causing bad posture, low energy, and general wear and tear.

Originally called “contrology”, the Pilates method was created by Joseph Pilates as a way to counteract these stresses and return the body to a state of both physical and mental fitness. Workouts at Embodiment Pilates are tailored to each individual client’s needs and goals, using Pilates’ original system as a guide.

Benefits of Pilates include:

  • better posture

  • better coordination

  • more strength

  • improved body awareness

  • improved flexibility and mobility

  • more endurance

  • injury prevention and rehabilitation

About Me

Katie with Lori at Atlas Pilates in 2019.

Katie with Romana in Seattle in 2004.

A Denver native, Katie found Pilates at the start of her dancing career while working with the Atlanta Ballet and immediately noticed the positive effects it had upon her body.

After several years of study and practice, Katie decided to become a certified instructor in 2002, completing a comprehensive 600 hour training program through The Pilates Studio and Romana’s Pilates, under the guidance of master teachers Lori Coleman-Brown, Lauren Stephen, Dorothee Vandewalle, Juanita Lopez, and Romana Kryzanowska, who was a pupil of Joseph Pilates himself.  After completing her certification, Katie taught for two years at Pilates Seattle International before moving to Oslo, Norway to dance with the Norwegian National Ballet. Even though dancing was Katie’s main focus during the 16 years she lived in Oslo, she still practiced Pilates regularly and taught others as her schedule allowed, including dancers of the Norwegian National Ballet and the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet School.

Katie’s retirement from the stage in 2021 and subsequent move back to Denver has allowed her to devote more time to teaching and studying Pilates, including participating in the inaugural Graduate Intensive Cycle in Spring 2023 with Lori Coleman-Brown at Atlas Pilates in Seattle.

Katie is thrilled to now have her own studio where she can share the many benefits of Pilates with others!

Client Testimonials

Katie’s approach to pilates is focused, detailed, and anatomically precise.

One of the most influential lessons I learned while working with Katie was how to integrate the different parts of my body so that my body as a whole can function with more precision and efficiency. This was vital both while rehabilitating from injuries and and performing at full capacity.

Katie has a deep understanding of bodily functioning and its application in the realms of both pilates and ballet. The depth of her knowledge and the sharpness of her eye are one of a kind.

Doing Pilates was going to be one of my primary anti aging activities. While it is that, with Katie as my teacher, it is so much more. She knows how and when to challenge me. She articulates movements so that I understand and do them safely.

With Katie’s encouragement, I have improved times and distances in other physical activities. As important, I feel more comfortable and confident in my body… even as I age!

— Lisa Davis

Katie played a pivotal role in helping me overcome a severe injury and rediscover confidence and balance in my body. Her profound comprehension of the human body is exceptional.

While I had previously studied Pilates in my youth, her ability to instill both passion and knowledge not only rekindled my interest but also made me appreciate Pilates more than ever before.

Maestra Katerina is unparalleled in her expertise.

— Riccardo Ambrogi

After a diagnosed double prolapse and degenerated disc, Katie approached me to see if I needed support, which says a lot about her belief in Pilates and the changes it can make to a lifestyle such as mine at the time, being a principal dancer with the Norwegian National Ballet.

Her gentle guidance, accompanied by her assurance and deep understanding of Joseph Pilates’ methods and training made me feel safe and confident. I learned simple ways to change bad habits that were negatively affecting my everyday life.

Katie is an incredibly patient, encouraging, nurturing, practical human being  and a total delight – I would recommend her in highest to anyone thinking about taking up Pilates, for health benefits, for toning, for body control and physical exercise.
